How does extraction work?

Preparation for tooth extraction

Dentists will review your dental and medical history, including medical conditions, recent surgeries and medication. The dentist will then explain how the procedure works, including numbing the pain, aftercare and more.

Your tooth is usually removed under a local anaesthetic to block the pain from your gums, but, you may experience pressure. Extractions don’t usually use a general anaesthetic, however, it can be an option for children or adults with learning disabilities or multiple teeth. For general anaesthetic, you will go to the hospital for your procedure.

The tooth extraction procedure

You will stay awake during your procedure for local anaesthetic, to inform you of what’s happening. A sedative may be possible if you’re feeling anxious to help you relax.

When you’re comfortable in the chair, the dentist injects a local anaesthetic around your tooth or teeth. When the injection is working, the procedure can start. The procedure starts with widening the tooth socket and loosening the tooth before you remove it.

You may experience some pressure, but, it shouldn’t be too painful. If you’re feeling pain, let the dentist know immediately.

Aftercare for tooth extraction

After removal, your gums may bleed for a few minutes and the dentist provides soft padding to bite on, stopping the bleeding.

The dentist advises you to care for your teeth and gums, with recommendations for painkillers and antibacterial mouthwash. Antibiotics may also help prevent infection.
